My aim today is to give you the best strategies that can help you get real and consistent results in your health and fitness .
My first point is you need to focus on making health and fitness a lifestyle. This mind shift is so powerful because as opposed to having the thought of a big workout looming over you, you actually spend your entire day doing tiny little habits that compound to give you massive results.
As the saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure.” I’m sure you will agree that if your entire lifestyle is based around health and fitness then you won’t need to spend as long in the gym if you are only going there to loose weight and tone.
The thought of doing that big workout seems so fantastic in the mind. Unfortunately for a lot of people, their lifestyle doesn’t actually support doing that one huge workout session. Often it can leave them feeling exhausted and sore for days after and that fantasy of becoming a gym junky comes to a grinding halt.
When you look at someone who is really struggling with their weight, (or any part of their life for that matter) they didn’t just wind up there one day by chance. While there are events that are out of our control, for the most part we’re all where we are by choice..hundreds if not thousands of tiny choices that determine the actions we do or do not take that in-turn give us our results. That’s why for someone who is overweight, it’s hard to change their eating habits because they have become so good at that action.
This is extremely powerful because this same principle can be used to create a solid foundation for success in all areas of our life. Every single choice we make is moving us in either a positive or negative direction.
This leads me to my next point. In order to make fitness a lifestyle, you want to begin by setting your environment up to make it so easy for you to make healthy choices. Here are some simple ways you can do this:
Throw out any clothing that makes you feel lazy and not at your best. Only wear clothes that motivate you and yes, the clothes you wear can affect your mood.
Put your gym gear beside your bed and put them on first thing in the morning. Become someone who wears active clothing as ofter as possible. Understand that the tiniest of actions in a positive direction at the start of a day can set the tone for the rest of the day.
Take a moment to think about what triggers you to make your worst health choices. It might be when you get home after a long days work, maybe when your around a certain person? Perhaps it’s if you haven’t eaten well all day, you come home and binge or maybe it’s when you do a certain activity such as watching TV. For anyone who is serious about getting results, identifying the triggers that cause you to make unhealthy choices is a must.
Throw out any every single bit of junk food in your house. If it’s there then chances are you will eat it. Eliminate the option for those times your will power might not be as strong. Start eating fruit when your hungry and eat smaller, more regular meals.
Put reminders around your house or on your phone to make sure you are on track and maintaining a great lifestyle. Even a little thing such as seeing a quote that motivates you can really help to keep you on track when that negative voice comes in your head (and yes we all get it;-). Focus on making your environment 110% in favour of you succeeding.
Become accountable to someone. I have found in my own experience that having someone who can hold you accountable to your goals can play a crucial part in actually succeeding. It’s ideal if you have a coach, mentor or someone who will help you to keep you on track, give you support and push you. In this case family and friends are not always ideal because they have a deeper connection to you and therefore may not want to push you when required. Also while it’s ok to inform the people around you so they can support you, be mindful not to tell them too much info because often the people closest to you won’t want you to change because they are comfortable with who you are.
This is just a natural function of the brain. Unless people are aware of this and they deliberately avoid trying and talk you out of changing, then wanting things to stay as they are is just something the brain does to keep us “safe” or to continue doing what it’s familiar with. However “safe” and familiar isn’t always good if it’s causing you to not live to your full potential.
Science has also shown that telling your friends too much about your goals can lead your brain to “celebrate” early as you tell everyone your grand plans and see their reactions. This can actually leave you in a state where you can loose the drive to go after your goals.
So while it’s great to make the people around you aware that you are making some improvements, be cautious about telling them too much about your big goals because it only takes that one negative or sarcastic remark to put out that spark.
Lastly, if you are serious about making fitness a lifestyle, remember that life sometimes throws us curveballs. Accept that there will be days when you might not be able to stick to your perfect routine and don’t be to hard on yourself. Always remember tomorrow is a new day to kick ass!
